Installing Solar Panels on a Metal Roof in Texas: What You Need to Know

SBI Editorial DeskUpdated Q1 · 20263 sections

Metal roofs are incredibly popular in Texas due to their durability, longevity, and energy efficiency. But when it comes to installing solar panels, metal roofs aren't just good—they are arguably the absolute best roof type available. If you have a metal roof, your path to solar energy is faster and less invasive than any other roofing material.

01

The Zero-Penetration Advantage (Standing Seam)

If you have a standing seam metal roof, we don't have to drill a single hole into your roof decking. SunBeam Innovations uses specialized S-5! mounting clamps that pinch directly onto the raised seams of the metal roof. These high-tensile clamps securely hold the racking system in place without piercing the metal, completely eliminating the risk of water leaks while maintaining incredible structural strength against Texas winds.

02

Corrugated Metal Roof Installations

If you have a corrugated metal roof rather than standing seam, penetrations are required, but they are handled with extreme precision. We use specialized brackets equipped with thick EPDM rubber gaskets. When the lag bolt is driven into the roof purlin, the gasket compresses against the metal, creating a permanent, watertight seal designed to expand and contract with the Texas heat.

03

Maximum Cooling Efficiency

Metal roofs already reflect a significant amount of heat. By adding solar panels, you create an additional layer of shade over your home. The airspace between the panels and the metal roof allows for rapid cooling, increasing the efficiency of both your solar array and your home's HVAC system.
